South of Mt Rainier NP (and its spectacular Christine Falls) is the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. It houses Old Growth Forest vegetation and the tantalizing Artistic Lewis River. The Lower Lewis River Falls was a favorite Salmon fishing spot; the falls stopped the fish from going upstream making it easy pickins'. The Lewis River, just before it's captured at the Swift Reservoir, provides a moonlit sunset. Swift Reservoir receives the Swift Creek, Pine Creek & Muddy River from melting glaciers on volcanic Mount St Helens. During the 1980 eruption, Swift Reservoir suddenly raised 2.8 feet!!! This Southern Washington region hosts Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument as well as historical timber and papermill town, Longview...built on the confluence of the Cowlitz River and Columbia River. |
